MAHZABIN MURDER
Family members of physician Shamarukh Mahzabin Shama, who was found dead in her in-laws’ house, alleged on Wednesday that police were trying to deflect the main issue by bringing topics of so-called dairy and suicide note and taking the side of former Awami League lawmaker Khan Tipu Sultan. Our correspondent in Jessore reported that briefing the media at Jessore Press Club, Nurul Islam, father of Mahzabin, claimed that his daughter was killed as she wanted to leak documents of misdeeds of her father-in-law Khan Tipu Sultan. Mahzabin, wife of Tipu’s eldest son Humayun Sultan, was found dead at her in-laws residence on November 13. The deceased’s family said she was killed by her in-laws who were trying to pass it off as an incident of suicide. Nurul said his only daughter did not commit suicide as it was not possible for his five feet and 2.5 inch high daughter to hang herself in a bathroom having five feet in height.
Her husband was then arrested in the murder case filed with Dhanmondi police station. Meanwhile, Mahzabin’s friends, doctors and interns of Holy Family Hospital on Wednesday formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka seeking justice for her. They said former lawmaker Tipu and his family killed Mahzabin and they were trying to deflect the investigation. They also demanded a proper post-mortem report. Recently few national dailies published reports, quoting police, that they found a dairy and suicide note written by Mahzabin. Nurul, talking to media over phone, alleged that police intentionally brought the issue of dairy and so-called suicide note to media. Mahzabin’s uncle Kazi Firozur Rahman said police showed him the dairy but he found the dairy’s handwriting different from that of Mahzabin’s. When approached, Dhanmondi police officer-in-charge Abu Bakar Siddique said they found a dairy in Mahzabin’s room and suicide note was written in it, but police were yet to examine it.
The case’s investigation officer, Kazi Shariful Islam, said they would collect handwriting samples of Mahzabin from her family, holy family hospital and her classmates and appeal to the court to examine it in Criminal Investigation Department’s lab. Nurul said the ‘killers’ of his daughter were trying to turn the post-mortem examination report in their favour. He demanded immediate arrest of former AL lawmaker Tipu Sultan and members of his family. Talking to New Age, Shahanur Sharif, brother of the deceased, said Tipu and members of his family used to torture Mahzabin. ‘She was not allowed to talk to us too,’ he added.
