BASABO SIBLINGS KILLING: Mother arrested, placed on five-day remand

Police on Saturday afternoon took the mother of the two siblings, who were found dead with their throats slit at their Uttar Basabo residence in the capital, on a five-day remand for interrogation about her suspected involvement in the killings, hours after she was arrested early Saturday.
Tanzina Begum was arrested from a road near their residence early Saturday and during primary interrogation by police, she admitted to killing her children, Sabujbagh police said.
Tanzina remained traceless since police recovered the bodies of her two children Mashrafi Bin Mahbub Abrar, 7, son of Mahbubur Rahman, and Abrar’s six-year-old sister Humaira Binte Mahbub Takia.
Mahbub, a staff of Dhaka WASA, lodged a case with Sabujbagh Police Station in connection with the killing.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Golam Nabi allowed a five-day remand of Tanzina after the Sabujbagh police produced her before the court with a seven-day remand prayer, sources in Dhaka court and police said.
Sabujbagh Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Kuddus said that though Tanzina primarily admitted to the killing, they were investigating whether others were involved and why the kids were killed.
The victims’ father said that he found the door of his 157/2 of Uttar Basabo residence near Sabujbagh Community Centre locked from outside when he returned after saying isha prayers at a local mosque Friday night.
He said that he later entered the house by opening it and found the throat-slit bodies of the two siblings in the bedroom.
He said that Tanzina was not found anywhere and the locals informed the police of it.
The Sabujbagh OC said that they recovered the bodies of the children from the room around 10:00pm and sent them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Some locals said the victims’ mother was mentally sick and often used to behave ‘abnormally’.
‘It is not sure whether she is mentally sick or not,’ said the Sabujbagh OC said.
DMCH forensic department assistant professor Sohel Mahmud, who conducted post-mortem examination at the hospital morgue Saturday afternoon, told reporters that the two kids were hacked to death with a sharp weapon.
