Paint walls to beautify buildings

Dhaka north city mayor said on Friday that there were no legal billboards in the city and that the city corporation would dismantle all those unauthorised hoardings, soon.
North City Corporation declared a war on unauthorised billboards, arches, banners, posters and graffiti and pledged to get those removed.
City mayor Annisul Haq in a press conference at his Gulshan office made the declaration 3-day prior to a deadline set by the High Court to report to it, after scrapping the illegal billboards and other advertisements.
He told his fellow councillors to remove illegally erected billboards and banners from their respective constituencies to comply with the High Court directive.
The HC on August 14 issued a fresh directive to Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation to submit compliance reports to it on August 22 over eradicating all unauthorised billboards, commercial displays, banners and festoons.
He, however, said political banners and billboards of the government would remain intact.
The mayor said they did not give permissions to anyone to construct any type of advertisement structures or displays.
Annisul Haq said his administration has been working against unauthorised advertisement and promotional structures on a regular basis as part of his campaign for a green and clean city.
‘We have removed about 20,000 billboards and 70,000 festoons in the mean time,’ said the mayor adding that they also filed cases against many billboard companies.
The mayor also urged the residents to paint their building walls to give facelifts to their residences and break down extended structures which affect movements of the pedestrians.
The mayor said they would submit their report to the court in time.
‘We will file cases and cancel trade license of the businessman who will violate rule,’ he warned.
A bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Mohammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association seeking implementation of a previous HC directive on removing illegal billboards and other publicity materials.
DNCC chief executive officer Md Mesbahul Islam, chief engineer brigadier general Md. Syeed Anwarul Islam, chief waste management officer, commodore MA Razzak, chief health officer, brigadier general S M M Saleh Bhuiyan, and secretary, Nabirul Islam were also present.
