Black Day observed at Dhaka University

The Dhaka University authorities observed Black Day on Tuesday remembering the ‘inhuman and condemnable’ attack on the university’s teachers, students and officials in August 20-23 in 2007, during the term of the military-backed caretaker government.
Teachers and students of the university wore black badges, formed a human chain and held a discussion meeting on the campus, demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits who were involved in the attacks.
The discussion was held in the TSC auditorium in the morning with DU vice-chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair.
Praising the then activities of the university, Arefin Siddique said that Dhaka University played a leading role at that critical time.
He also demanded exemplary punishment for those who were involved in this incident.
Among others, DU pro-VC (education) Professor Nasreen Ahmed, Professor Aktaruzzaman (administration), treasurer Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Dhaka University Teachers’ Association president Professor Fariduddin Ahmed, and general secretary ASM Maksud kamal, were present at the programme.
The human chain rally was held on Aparajeyo Bangla premises on the campus.
Among others, Professors Anwar Hossain addressed the human chain and demanded punishment for the perpetrators.
On August 20 in 2007, some army men beat pup three DU students and insulted a teacher at the DU gymnasium playground during a football match.
The incident sparked clashes between police and students.
Two professors of the university— Anwar Hossain and Harun-or-Rashid were arrested on August 23.
