Shafik Rehman freed on bail, hospitalised

Senior journalist Shafik Rehman was admitted to BIRDEM Hospital in the capital after his release on bail from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur on Tuesday.
Shafik, former editor of Bangla daily Jaijaidin, was straight taken to the hospital in the afternoon from Gazipur as he has been suffering from diabetes, family members said.
They said that the journalist was being treated under Professor AK Azad Khan.
Earlier at about 12:45pm, the senior journalist was released from Kashimpur central jail’s part-2 after his bail order reached the jail authorities, the jail superintendent Prasanta Kumar Banik said.
Shafik’s wife Taleya Rehman and other relatives received the journalist at the jail gate by offering red roses to him.
Detectives arrested Shafik Rehman from his Eskaton Garden residence in the city on April 16 in a case filed over an alleged plot to abduct and kill prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in the USA.
The case was lodged with the Paltan Police Station on August 3, 2015 in connection with the alleged attempt.
On April 27, on completion of his 10-day remand in police custody in two phases, a Dhaka court sent the journalist to jail.
On June 7, the High Court rejected the bail plea of Shafik Rehman in the case.
Later on July 17, the SC granted Shafik’s prayer to file an appeal before the court against the HC order.
On August 31, the Supreme Court granted him bail for three months.
