AL plans grand reception for Hasina

The Ruling Awami League has planned a grand reception for prime minister Sheikh Hasina, also the party president, for her ‘success’ in the United Nations General Assembly and ‘fruitful’ bilateral discussion with Canada.
As part of its programme, the party would organise a massive gathering in the capital on September 26 on her return from the United States after attending the 71st UN General Assembly.
‘We will organise a grand reception for prime minister Sheikh Hasina on her return on September 26,’ AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam told reporters on Wednesday after a joint meeting of the party at the party president’s political office at Dhanmandi.
During the two-week tour, Hasina highlighted her government’s success in the UN General Assembly and held a bilateral meeting with her Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau on the extradition of Noor Chowdhury, condemned to death for the killing of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and all but two of his family members.
Ashraf, also the public administration minister, said that the leaders and activists would give Hasina a standing ovation stretching from Shahjalal International Airport to her residence, Ganabhaban.
The prime minister is scheduled for 5:20pm on September 26 to arrive at the airport.
The party also held a meeting of its secretaries on Tuesday at the same venue to discuss necessary preparations to make the reception a success.
Sheikh Hasina is now in New York to attend the 71st UN General Assembly. Earlier, she attended the 5th Global Fund Replenishment Conference in Montreal in Canada.
Mentioning the ‘success of Hasina in the tour’ and her ‘efficiency in ruling the country’, Ashraf said that Sheikh Hasina was not only an asset of Awami League but also of the nation.
AL joint general secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif, organising secretary Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, law affairs secretary Abdul Matin Khasru, Dhaka city unit leaders Sadek Khan, Shahe Alam Murad and central leader Pankaj Debnath, among others, attended the meeting with Syed Ashraf in the chair.
