BNP to hold demo against Tarique’s arrest warrant

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday announced to hold demonstration in Dhaka on October 2 and other metropolitan areas and districts next day protesting the arrest warrant against its senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman. BNP vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu made this announcement at a press conference this morning at Party’s central office at city’s Nayapaltan area. He alleged that the government was entangling Tarique with fake cases in order to humiliate him out of political vengeance. ‘We urge the government not to harass the innocent and popular leader Tarique Rahman with false cases’ he said. Earlier on Thursday, a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court issued arrest warrant against three individuals, including Tarique, in a sedition case filed in 2015.   The two other accused in the case are Mahathir Farooki Khan, the then chief reporter of ETV and Kanak Sarwar, the then special correspondent of the private TV channel. On January 8, 2015, the sedition case was filed with Tejgaon police station over the live telecast of an alleged provocative speech by Tarique at a programme in London on January 5.   Tarique has been in London since September 11, 2008 on medical grounds after securing parole in various cases.
