Derailment snaps Dhaka-north Bengal train communications
Train communications between Dhaka and northern regions and Khulna were suspended as five carriages along with its locomotive of a local train derailed near Soydabad station in the west of Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj on Sunday morning. No one was injured in the accident but panic grasped the travellers, train riders and station officials said. Witnesses said Dhaka-bound Rajshahi Express that had started from Ishwardi junction veered off the track while it was approaching Bangabandhu Bridge at around 8:20am after leaving Soydabad railway station. Two ticket collectors, unwilling to disclose their names, said the Soydabad railway station authority was responsible for the accident as it did not adjust the lines into broad-gauge from narrow-gauge after Ekota Express (narrow-gauge train) left the station half an hour prior to the derailment. Bangladesh Railway (west zone ) general manager, Abdul Awal Bhuiyan, said a salvage train from Ishwardi already started for Soydabad to clear the track.
