Daylong shutdown underway peacefully in Khagrachari

A dawn-to-dusk general strike is passing peacefully in Khagrachari district on Tuesday in protest of escalating events of terrorism and extortions, and killing of a school headmaster. The district Santrash Chandabaj Protirodh Committee (Anti-terror, extortion committee) sponsored the shutdown as Khagrachari municipality mayor Rafiqul Alam, also the convenor of the committee, announced the programme on Monday. The pro-hartal activists gathered in the city’s Mahila College road, Court Building area, Mahajanpara road, Chengi Square and Shapla Chattar since morning. No long-route vehicles moved from the city since the striking hour began.

The night coaches, however, entered in the city with police escorts. Even the light vehicles were hardly seen plying on the streets. The shops and commercial establishments were closed. However, various offices and educational institutions were open with a thinner presence. Additional policemen were deployed in the key points of the city to avert any untoward incident. A group of miscreants gunned down the headmaster of Manikchari Collegiate High School, Chingsa Mong Chowdhury, also a vice-president of Manikchari Awami League unit on Saturday night. The volley of bullets also injured Mongsajai Marma, alias, Japan Babu, president of the upazila unit of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti. However, the rival United Peoples Democratic Front declined its involvement in the killing of Chingsa Mong Chowdhury.
