One killed as BCL groups trade fire at CU

A Bangladesh Chhatra League activist was killed and five others were injured in a gunfight between two groups of the ruling Awami League-backed student organisation at Chittagong University on Sunday over taking position during placing wreaths at the Shaheed Minar marking the Martyred Intellectuals Day. The police arrested 27 Chhatra League activists at Shahjalal Hall following the clash and they were taken to Hathazari police station for interrogation, additional superintendent of police Shahidullah said adding that the situation was now under control.

The Chittagong University syndicate sat in an emergency meeting following the Chhatra League infighting. Chhatra League activist Tapos Roy, a first year Pali and Sanskrit student, sustained bullet injury during the gunfight in front of Shah Amanat Hall and he succumbed to the injury at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said CMCH police outpost sub-inspector Zahirul Islam. Witnesses said that the gunfight took place in front of the Shah Amanat Hall at around noon following an altercation between two groups of Chhatra League activists over taking positions while paying tributes to the martyred intellectuals at the university’s Shaheed Minar. Chhatra League men locked into the altercation after returning to their dormitories — Shah Amanat Hall and Shahjalal Hall — and at one stage followers the rival groups clashed with brickbats and later they were angaged in gunfight, witnesses said. Six Chhatra League activists, including Tapos, botany Master’s students Alauddin Alam and Al Amin Rimon and fourth year social science student Sabbir Hossen, sustained bullet injuries, the witnesses said. The police fire several tear gas shells to disperse the groups. Following the fighting, additional police forces were deployed on the campus to avert any further clash, said university proctor Siraj-ud-Daula.

Both the rival groups had been trying to establish their supremacy on the campus for several months and fighting for ensuring their position in the Chhatra League university committee. Both the groups are loyal to Chittagong city Awami League president ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Chhatra League sources said. On November 12, prime minister Sheikh Hasina, while visiting Chittagong, directed Mohiuddion and city Awami League general secretary AZM Nasir Uddin to resolve factional clashes in Chhatra League. A gunfight between rival groups of Chhatra League left Suman Chandra Das, 23, a business administration student of a private university, killed at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet on November 20.
