Police release photos of seven extremists

Police on Sunday night released the photos of seven alleged extremists who were killed during Saturday’s raid at a den in Patartek area of Gazipur.

The photos surfaced on Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s news portal ‘DMP News’.

A report at the news portal said the extremists had used different names at different times and places.

‘It is necessary to know their actual identity for the sake of investigation,’ it said.

The DMP requested all to inform either through sending message to the inbox of the DMP’s facebook page, using Hello City CT apps, or directly informing Gazipur district police, if anyone of the extremists can be recognised.

Earlier on Saturday, a team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, Special Weapon and Tactics team, and district police launched an operation at a den in a two-storey building in Patartek area around 12:00am.

‘The law enforcers first asked the extremists to surrender but they didn't respond to their call. Then they opened fire on them who also fired back. The three-hour gunfight left seven extremists dead,’ said home minister Asaduzzaman Khan at a press briefing after the operation.

The seven 'extremists' included Neo JMB military commander Akash and four madrassah students, he said.

The minister said the anti-extremist operations have been successful as common people came forward to assist the law enforcers.

Earlier, two alleged extremists — Tawhidul Islam, 22, and Rashedul Islam, 22 — were killed in a reported gunfight during a raid on a 'extremist den' by members of Rapid Action Battalion in Harinal area of Gazipur city in the morning.

In Tangail, two alleged extremists were killed in a joint operation by police and Rapid Action Battalion in Kagmara area of the district town in the morning.

Meanwhile, alleged financer of banned Islamist outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh, Abdur Rahman, who suffered injuries in a raid by members of Rapid Action Battalion at Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, died at Enam Medical College Hospital on Saturday night.
