BNP greets Hasina, Quader

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir congratulated Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader as they were elected as the ruling Awami League’s president and general secretary, respectively, Sunday afternoon.
After a programme at Segunbagicha in the afternoon, he told journalists, ‘This is important news that Sheikh Hasina has been elected president of Awami League again and Obaidul Quader, general secretary’.
‘I congratulate both of them…and strongly urge that they would work to fulfill the nation’s intense desire– returning democracy and rights of the people’, the BNP secretary general
said.
Fakhrul attended the birthday celebration of renowned filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam who, if was alive, would have turned 75 on Sunday. The programme was held at Kochi Kachar Mela auditorium.
Speaking as chief guest, he said, Awami League held a ‘grand carnival’ in the name of national council. There was ‘nothing’ for the common people there.
‘We hoped that from the council, there would come some directives on how to march forward towards restoring democracy’, he said.
He said: ‘We are not talking about (directives) putting BNP to power, but we are talking about restoring the rights of the people.’
He alleged that there were no democratic rights to speak out, freedom of association and media freedom in the country.
Fakhrul criticised the foreign delegates who joined the Awami League council and praised the government’s activities.
‘They (the international citizens) had talked about many things, but not about the key issue — the absence of democracy, rights to votes and people’s rights to speak’, he said.
Fakhrul underscored the contribution of filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam to the nation.
