AL councillors for narrowing gap between leaders, activists

Many councillors in the second-day council session of the ruling Awami League on Sunday demanded evaluating activists properly, narrowing the gap between leaders and activists and stopping lawmakers’ influence over rutine party activities to further strengthen the party.
On the concluding day of the 20th national conference of the party, they observed that a section of the party leaders and activists was biggest enemy of the party and demanded electing young and dynamic leadership in the council session.
District leaders raised their voice while party president Sheikh Hasina, also the prime minister, and general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam were on the dais, a number of councillors said.
At the outset of the first working session on the day at the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh, Hasina asked the party leaders and activists to get prepared for the next general elections making people aware of the development works of the government.
‘It is a must for us to go to the doorsteps of mass people to make them aware about our development activities if we want to win the next elections for the third consecutive term,’ she said.
‘I want to see honesty to prevail among the leaders and activists of the Awami League...I want to see its future leaders are elected to make the party even stronger,’ Hasina said.
‘Find new leadership as long as I am here, I am alive,’ Hasina urged the councillors who in reply, shouted ‘No… No,’ a councillor told New Age.
Moulvibazar district AL president Nesar Ahmed told the working session that they were trying to reach the doorstep of people but failed because of some problems with some leaders.
Panchagarh district AL general secretary Shahadat Samrat said that they had confidence in Hasina and thought that she would select such people with whom party activist could keep faith. ‘We do not want to see any Mirzafar [traitor] in the leadership,’ he said.
‘We need to narrow the gap between leaders and activists to strengthen the party,’ said Sylhet city AL president Badruddin Ahmed Kamran, adding that the arty should be ‘activists friendly.’
Brahmanbaria AL general secretary Al Mamun alleged that a lawmaker elected from the district was ‘obstructing’ regular activities of the party. He, however, did not name the lawmaker.
Lalmonirhat AL general secretary Matiur Rahman urged Hasina to convene an extended meeting of local leaders at least once in a year where local leaders could express their thoughts.
Gazipur AL president Ajmatullah Khan said that there were some people in the party who were busy bullying others and it should be stopped for the betterment of the party.
