‘Eliminating corruption fully is not possible’: Iqbal Mahmud

Anti-Corruption Commission chairman Iqbal Mahmud on Tuesday said it is not possible to eliminate corruption fully in Bangladesh.

‘But it is possible to control and curb. The ACC is working with this objective,’ he said speaking as the chief guest at a seminar on 'Role of Mass Media in Prevention of Corruption' at Press Institute of Bangladesh seminar room in the city.

Organised by the Ministry of Information, the seminar was presided over by information secretary Martuza Ahmed. 

The ACC chairman said money and muscle power are the main barriers for prevention of corruption. 

Anti-graft procedural problem is another barrier; he said and called for procedural changes to check corruption.

Iqbal Mahmud sought cooperation of journalists in prevention of corruption and urged them to create awareness against graft and be more caring and conscious in making reports on corruption.

It is not right to call anyone corrupt only on the basis of an allegation, he said.

Daily Shamokal editor and IPB board of directors chairman Golam Sarwar and Bangladesh federal union of journalists president Manzurul Ahsan Bulbul addressed the seminar as special guests.

Golam Sarwar urged ACC to take more stern actions against the corrupt people.
He pointed out that now-a-days that the reporters do not go for an in-depth investigation while making a report on corruption. In many cases, they fall under pressure for the advertisers, he added. 

Manzurul Ahsan Bulbul suggested journalists to be more responsible while marking a corruption related report.

71 Television managing director Mozammel Babu, daily Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamol Dutta, daily Amader Arthonity editor Naimul Islam Khan, daily Prothom Alo joint editor Sohrab Hassan and principal information officer Shamim Chowdhury took part in the discussion while Dhaka University Mass Communication and Journalism department chairman Mafizar Rahman presented the keynote paper. PIB director general M Shah Alamgir delivered the address of welcome.
