AL to hold dialogue over next polls if necessary, says Quader

The Awami League general secretary, Obaidul Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, on Sunday said the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, would initiate a move for holding dialogue for a national cause if necessary, but not at this moment.

He, however, hinted that the government would not wait for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in holding the next polls in time.

Talking to reporters at the secretariat, Obaidul hoped BNP would not commit the same mistake it had done during January 2014 polls.

The BNP has been pressing the government for days for holding dialogue over the issue of next general elections. They were also demanding that the Election Commission must be reconstituted on the basis of opinions of all political parties.

The Election Commission would be reconstituted as per the constitution, the minister responded to a question.

At this moment, one of the major challenges for the government is to contain religious extremism, he added.
