Gazipur strike underway peacefully
The dawn to dusk strike enforced by Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance, protesting the authorities’s ban on political gatherings in Gazipur, was underway peacefully, witnesses said.BNP’s Gazipur district unit president and central organising secretary Fazlul Haque Milon announced the fresh programmes at a press conference at Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office after she held a meeting with senior leaders on Friday.
A large number of policemen along with Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh forces were seen deployed all over the district to fend off any trouble. No picketing by the party activists was seen in the town since the strike began this morning.
The Gazipur deputy commissioner, Nurul Islam, said security have been tightened to avert any unwanted situations in the district.
He said some 10 to 15 picketers were trying to siege Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Sri Pur this morning but they fled when the police came in.
A few of the vehicles, especially public transports, were seen on the roads while shops remained closed.The shutdown that began at 6.00am will end at 6.00pm. No untoward incident was reported till filing of this report at 10:30am.
A day before, the local administration in Gazipur imposed section 144 on the rally venue while the police slapped a ban on all kinds of political activities across the district after Bangladesh Chhatra League, the Awami League-backed student organisation, threatened to thwart the BNP’s rally and occupied the venue at Bhawal Badre Alam College ground.Earlier, on Friday, Mirza Fakhrul Islam, acting secretary general of BNP at a press conference in Gulshan office had said that the rally would be held at ‘any cost’ in Gazipur.
