Whereabouts of ‘released’ Daud Merchant unknown

Whereabouts of Indian citizen Abdul Rauf alias Daud Merchant, an accused of the murder of musician Gulshan Kumar in India, was unknown since his release from Dhaka Central Jail Sunday evening.
Dhaka Central Jail senior superintendent Md Jahangir Kabir told New Age that they freed the Indian national after receiving an order of the court that withdrew ‘the warrant for his custody.’
Jahangir said that Abdul Rauf was detained in the jail in connection with the warrant for his custody after the court cleared him of suspicion of involvement in crimes.
‘We release Abdul Rauf following the jail code for the release of foreign nationals,’ he said.
The jail authority needs to inform the government, two months before the
scheduled release of a foreign prisoner after expiry of his jail terms.
Prison officials said that the foreign prisoners could not be freed from the jail unless the embassy concerned took responsibility of their citizen consulting with the respective government.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told reporters that the Indian national was released as his jail term ended.
The home minister elaborated neither how he was released nor his whereabouts.
In January, the home minister said that an initiative had been taken to repatriate Daud.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on November 3 dropped the charge against Daud in a case related to his suspicious movement.
There was no report whether Daud was handed over to any Indian authority after the release.
Daud Merchant, a reported sidekick of Indian crime boss Daud Ibrahim, was arrested at Kashimpur Jail gate in Gazipur on December 1, 2014, immediately after his release on bail.
He was arrested on charge of suspicious movement earlier on May 27, 2009 at Mourai in Brahmanbaria.
Daud Merchant alias Rauf Raja, 45, also a convict of the murder of Mumbai musician Gulshan Kumar, was now facing other charges in India, officials said.
Gulshan Kumar, renowned owner of Indian music company T-series, was shot dead on a street in Mumbai on August 12, 1997.
He was believed to have been murdered through paid killers after refusing to pay extortions to city gangsters. Daud, who had been serving a sentence in an Indian jail since 2002, went into hiding after being released on a 14-day parole in March 2009 to visit his family in Mumbra, a small town about 40 kilometres from Mumbai, Indian media had reported.
