BNP sticks to holding rally at Nayapaltan

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday said they would hold their rally, scheduled for today, at Nayapaltan in the capital without any ‘hesitation and trepidation’ while
the party was still awaiting police permission for the rally.
At a press briefing at the party’s central office in the afternoon, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir said, ‘The rally will be held in front of our party central office at Nayapalatan, because BNP must hold the programme marking “revolution and solidarity day”.’
‘There is no hesitation and trepidation that BNP feels in holding the rally,’ he said.
Rizvi said BNP took all-out preparations for the rally and there was ‘festive mood’ among leaders and activists to hold the rally, where the party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, would be chief guest.
Rizvi asked the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to give its decision on the location of the rally and added that if law enforcers wanted, BNP could postpone the rally for a day.
Asked if the DMP did not give the permission at all, he said, ‘BNP is committed to holding a peaceful rally and maintain
all legal formalities. We hope police will respond over the matter as soon as possible’.
BNP is observing the 41st anniversary of November 7 uprising amid tension this year as they party and ruling Awami League took a confrontational stance over the rally.
Awami League leaders issued warnings that no rally would be allowed in Dhaka, while DMP on Monday denied BNP permission for the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.
The party later rescheduled their venue at Nayapaltan and petitioned DMP for permission to hold the rally on Tuesday, but the party was yet to get any response from the metropolitan police.
Several BNP leaders were arrested in last couple of days, including assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu, form the party’s office gate.
BNP has alleged that police are arresting their leaders and activists
to create panic ahead of their rally.
Amid tension, several thousand leaders and activists of the party gathered at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Monday morning, when BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia paid homage to the party founder and former president Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of November 7 uprising amid alert presence of large contingent of police, backed by armoured personnel carriers, water cannons and prison vans.
