Court asks Khaleda to defend her on Nov 24 in Zia charitable trust case

The Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-3 on Thursday asked Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia to defend herself in the over the charges of Zia Charitable Trust graft case.

The court said she can defend her in writing, speaking before the court or brining any witness before the court.

Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar set November 24 for the next proceeding of the case.

The court also set November 17 for recording testimony of another witness in Zia orphanage trust graft case.

Khaleda Zia appeared before the court in the morning.

The former prime minister, flanked by party leaders, lawyers and security personnel, arrived in the makeshift court premises at Bakshibazar around 10:30am.

Security has been beefed up in and around the court.

On August 8, 2011, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon police station accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abusing power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources.

Besides, the commission filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on July 3, 2008 with Ramna police station accusing Khaleda Zia, her eldest son Tarique Rahman, now living in the UK after securing bail, and four others for misappropriating over Tk 2.10 crore that came as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.
