Daud Merchant taken to Mumbai

Indian national Abdul Rauf alias Daud Merchant, who was released from Dhaka Central Jail on November 6, was placed before a court in Mumbai by Mumbai police on Friday in connection with the murder of singer and founder of T-series, Gulshan Kumar.
According to police officials, following his release from Bangladesh prison, Merchant was escorted to Meghalaya by Bangladesh authorities and handed over to the Indian Border Security Force, The Hindu reported on Friday.
A team of Mumbai crime branch officers whisked to Meghalaya on Wednesday to take the man under their custody, Crime Branch officials said.
A crime branch senior officer said as the diplomatic formalities were being worked out between the next-door neighbours, Merchant entered in India through a Meghalaya border point when BSF detained him.
An Indian joint commissioner of police (crime), Sanjay Saxena said, ‘The BSF, after questioning Merchant, found out that he was wanted in Mumbai for jumping parole in the Gulshan Kumar murder case.’
Merchant was flown to Mumbai early on Thursday morning and was produced before the High Court.
‘The High Court directed the police to produce him in the sessions court on Friday, Saxena added.
Merchant was a convict in a case on killing Gulshan Kumar in broad daylight in 1997 and had breached parole in 2009, Indian police said.
The Indian Express reported that Merchant has at least 10 cases registered against him in Mumbai and Mumbra (Amrut Nagar being his last area of residence there). These included murder, violation of the Arms Act, attempt to murder and assault.
Merchant, a reported sidekick of Indian crime master, Dawood Ibrahim, was arrested in Bangladesh for entering the country without valid documents in May, 2009. He was convicted of intrusion and illegally staying in Bangladesh and given a five-year prison term. When he completed the sentence, he was arrested again in December 2014 over a possible terror links.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said in January that an initiative had been taken to repatriate Daud.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on November 3 dropped a charge against Daud in a case related to his suspicious movement.
