BNP’s nationwide demo today

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday announced countrywide demonstration for today to protest against the government’s denial of permitting the party to hold its rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan, in the capital.
After rescheduling twice, BNP had set Sunday for convening its rally to mark November 7 as the ‘national revolution and solidarity day’.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a news briefing at the party’s central office in the city announced the demo, condemning the unaccommodating attitude of the government.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was supposed to address the rally.
Protest processions and rallies would be held at all the thanas under Dhaka city and district headquarters and other metropolitan cities, across the country, Fakhrul said.
A good number of police members were seen deployed in front of BNP central office.
Fakhrul said BNP is a registered political party and that it was elected multiple times to govern the country.
‘BNP is the largest political party in the country but it cannot hold any public meeting,’ he said, adding this is the situation of democracy now.
He said the denial is a constitutional violation of BNP’s rights to hold public meeting.
Fakhrul argued that public meeting is not prohibited in the country and that there is no state of emergency imposed.
He observed that democracy had been buried a few years ago when the Awami League assumed the government and that a ‘Kulkhawni’ (post-burial programme) was now being held.
He alleged that the government has now been authoritarian and protecting its illegal governance.
He said BNP delegation visited Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner office many times to meet with the officials concerned to check what happened to their prayer– seeking permission to hold the rally– but none met with them.
