Human rights activists slam govt

Human rights activists, politicians and cultural activists have slammed the government for its failure to ensure the security of minority groups in the country.
They have also demanded investigation into the recent attacks on the Santal community at Gobindaganj upazila in Gaibandha and judicial inquiry into the killings of three members of the community in those attacks.
They made the demands at a protest rally which was held under the banner of Chhatra Jonotar Protibad in front of the National Museum in the city’s Shahbag on Sunday.
The protestors said that the government must ensure fair trial in the killing incidents and provide the affected Santal people with compensation and
security.
They also demanded scrapping of all false cases against the Santals, and withdrawal of the officials of the local administration as they were involved in the attacks.
Human rights activist Sultana Kamal, also former adviser to caretaker government, while addressing the rally, said that the government failed to ensure securities for the people of minorities communities.
The tradition of impunity also inspired the perpetrators to commit crimes repeatedly, she said.
‘The incidents of Nasirnagar and Gaibandha are an outburst of our sectarian attitudes which we have been nurturing for years,’ she added.
Among others, Dhaka University Associate Professor Tanzimuddin Khan, barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, human rights activist Rakhal Raha, singer Kafil Ahmed, and central leaders of Bangladesh Students’ Union, Bangladesh Students’ Federation and Bangladesh Students’ Front, spoke at programme.
