Case filed, five held four Santals get bail in police case

A case was filed Wednesday night for the attack on Santals at Shahebganj-Bagda Farm of Rangpur Sugar Milla at Gobindaganj in Gaibandha in which two of them were killed, 20 were injured and their houses were robbed and set on fire on November 6.
Five suspects in the incidents were arrested after Swapan Murmu, a Santal man, lodged the case with Gobindaganj police station against about 600 unnamed people, said Gobindaganj police station officer-in-charge Subrata Kumar Sarker.
Two Santals were killed and 20 were injured and houses of Santals on the farm lands were robbed and set on fire as police along with local activists of the ruling Awami League evicted about 1,500 Santal families from the farm lands on November 6.
Following the incidents, the evicted Santals alleged that they could not file any case with the police as they went into hiding after police prosecuted them.
The case was lodged following a meeting between leaders of the ethnic minority community and Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader in Dhaka Tuesday night, the community leaders said.
They said that the Santals were assured of no police harassment if anyone wanted to file a case.
Subrata told New Age that they detained five suspects in the attack – Badsha Mia, 50, and Manik Sarkar, 26, of Chak Rahimapur village, Chayan Mia, 25, of Taraf Kamal village, and Abdur Rashid, 60, and Shahnewaz, 38, of Shahebganj village.
He said that they were trying to arrest the other suspects.
Santal leader Philimon Baske, also Shahebganj-Bagda Farm Land Restoration Solidarity Committee vice-president, urged the government to form an impartial committee to investigate the incidents.
Police on November 7 recorded a case accusing 42 named and 300-400 unnamed Santals of the attack on the cops that left eight cops injured.
Four Snatals, including two under treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, were arrested during the eviction.
A Judicial magistrate’s court in Gaibandha on Thursday granted bail to the four Santals, including Bimal Kisku and Manik Soren who were given treatment treated at Rangpur Medical College Hospital in handcuffs in police custody.
Bimal and Manik were, however, removed to Gaibandha jail after the High Court ordered immediate removal of their handcuffs.
Magistrate ASM Taskinul Huq of the court granted bail to the four Santals – Bimal, Manik, Dijen Tudu and Majhi Hembrom – after hearing their petition for bail, the police official said.
