AL picks Ivy for NCC poll

The ruling Awami League has nominated incumbent mayor Selina Hayat Ivy as party’s mayoral candidate in the Narayanganj City Corporation election.
The local government nomination board of the party at a meeting on Friday decided that Selina Hayat would take part in the election with the party symbol, boat, said AL office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap.
The meeting was presided over by the AL president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban. 
The second Naryanganj City Corporation elections would be held on December 22. 
At a meeting on Tuesday, the Naryanganj city Awami League proposed the names three Awami League leaders as prospective mayoral candidates excluding Selina Hayat Ivy, also a vice-president district AL unit.
Narayaganj AL recommended AL city unit president Anwar Hossain, Siddhirganj upazila unit president Mojibur Rahman and Bandar upazila unit president MA Rashid.
The maiden election to the city corporation was held on 30 October 2011 when incumbent mayor Selina Hayat Ivy was elected the country’s first female city mayor defeating Awami League-backed Shamim Osman. BNP had boycotted the election.
BNP on Thursday at its standing committee meeting decided to take part in the upcoming NCC election.
The local government nomination board also decided that the party would give preference to opinion polls while giving nominations to the zilla parishad election from aspirants.
The board also asked president and secretaries of all district committees to recommend the names of 15 members and five female reserved members for the zilla parishad within seven days.
