BNP nominates Shakhawat for NCC polls

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday declared Shakhawat Hossain Khan, former Narayanganj District Bar Association president, as the party’s mayoral candidate for Narayanganj City Corporation polls.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia Monday night instructed the district unit leaders of the party to work together to come out victorious in the race. 
The city corporation poll is going to be held on December 22 for the first time with party symbol.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi from a news briefing at the party’s Naya Paltan central office announced Shakhawat as the party’s candidate.
Addressing another programme at National Press Club on the day, he called for deployment of army in the city poll. 
BNP candidate Shakhawat Hossain Khan came into limelight as a prosecutor in the sensational seven-murder case.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday night held a meeting with the party’s grassroots leaders of Narayanganj district and city units and mayor aspirants at her Gulshan office.
The meeting that lasted about three hours from 9:00pm vested Khaleda with the responsibility to pick the mayor candidate, the meeting sources said.
At the meeting, the district BNP president, Taimur Alam Khandaker, who was the party’s nominated candidate in last NCC poll, and former lawmaker Abul Kalam Azad expressed their unwillingness to contest the poll as their names were proposed, the sources said.
Then local leaders proposed other names, including those of Shakhawat Hossain Khan, ATM Kamal and Mamun Haider.
Khaleda at the closed door meeting asked the party’s Narayenganj unit leaders to work together for the great interest of the party.
On Monday late night, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the waiting reporters that name of mayor candidate would be announced Tuesday.
On Tuesday, BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said they would take the NCC poll as last test case to see whether there was any change in the government’s character and mentality.
