Nationwide transport blockade enters 2nd day

The countrywide indefinite transport blockade, enforced by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led 20-party alliance, entered second day on Wednesday, reports United News of Bangladesh.Vehicular movement in the capital remained as usual as blockaders were hardly seen in the city in the morning. However, a bus was torched in Shewrapara.Witnesses said a bus of ‘Shikhar Paribahan’ was set afire near a police box at about 9:05 am.Local people doused the fire immediately.Train services with Dhaka and other districts were normal today.No untoward incident was reported from any parts of the country till filing of this report around 8:15 am.BNP chief Khaleda Zia called the countrywide indefinite blockade from Tuesday as the government did not allow her party and allies to hold protest rallies in the capital.
Stray incidents of clashes and vandalism took place in different parts of the country, including the capital on the first day of the blockade.Six vehicles, including five buses, were set ablaze in Bangshal, Dilkusha, Shahbagh and Gulistan areas of the capital on Tuesday.Three picketers and an Ansar member suffered burn injuries when the pickets were trying to set fire to a requisitioned human hauler of police on Fatullah-Postogola road in front of Lal Masjid in Kadamtoli area in the city.At least 30 BNP and Jamaat men were injured in separate clashes with police in Khulna and Narayanganj districts.At least 20 vehicles were vandalized by activists of BNP-Jamaat in Alekharchar area of sadar upazila in Comilla.Police in their separate drives arrested at least 110 leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat from different upazilas of Comilla, Satkhira and Sunamganj districts.
Meanwhile, a daylong hartal called by local BNP protesting the arrest of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is underway in eight districts under Rangpur division today.
