50 train riders injured as miscreants unscrew fishplates in Moulvibazar

Blockaders unscrewed fishplates in Moulvibazar early Thursday causing a train derailment that left some 50 riders injured and interrupting train communications. The countrywide non-stop blockade is enforced by Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance protesting its chairperson Khaleda Zia’s confinement to the party’s Gulshan office. The miscreants unscrewed fishplates of a track at Shamshernagar in Kamalganj upazila. The train communications between Sylhet-Dhaka and Sylhet-Chittagong were shut. Kulaura railway police office-in-charge, Jahangir Hossain, said six coaches along with the locomotive of the Chittagong-bound Udayan Express that had started from Sylhet veered off the track near Shamshernagar station around 3:05am. The blockaders are responsible for the accident as they removed fishplate that is bolted to the ends of two rails to join them together in a track, he said. The accident left 50 to 60 passengers injured who are taking treatments in local hospitals, the OC said. A salvage train from Kulaura reached the spot and relocated five compartments while another relief train from Akhaura in Brahmanbaria was on the way to join the salvage operation. The Sylhet-bound Upaban Express from Dhaka got stranded at Srimangal station, our correspondent reported. In Jaipurhat, the pro-blockaders also uprooted 36-feet rail track at Urirbridge in Sadar upazila on Thursday. Witnesses said the security personnel of Jaipurhat station found a part of track was cut off around 7:00am. As a result, The Rajshahi-bound Barendra Express got stuck at Panchbibi station. Abdur Rahim, the deputy commissioner, said the repair of the track was underway.
