Sedition case filed against Tarique, ETV chairman

A sedition case was filed against the Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman and private television channel Ekushey Television chairman Abdus Salam with Tejgaon police station Thursday afternoon.The case was filed under penal code and police incitement to disaffection act 1922, said Tejgaon police station officer-in-charge Mahzarul Islam.The police station sub-inspector Borhanuddin filed the case against the duo around 12:30pm, said police.The police officials said Tarique Rahman addressed a programme in United Kingdom’s London city and made some controversial comments while ETV had live telecasted it.The case was filed in that connection.


According to the case, Tarique Rahman and Abdus Salam in collusion made derogatory comments against the state and telecasted it live, which led to the recent anarchy, said the police station sub-inspector Abdul Halim.The duo had telecast false, fabricated, provocative and misleading information which posed a threat to the sovereignty of Bangladesh, he said.The case also stated that the duo disrespected the court with their act and also tried to spread anarchy and create chaos in the Bangladesh armed forces, Border Guard Bangladesh and police forces and destabilize the country, said the police.The private television ETV telecast Tarique Rahman’s speech live on Tuesday and afterward their broadcasting was disrupted.


The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Salam in front of his office early Tuesday and he was shown arrested in a case filed under pornography act with Cantonment police station.The High Court on Wednesday asked the government to ensure that no print and electronic media, online post and even social media published any statement of Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior vice-president Tarique Rahman as he is wanted in several defamation and criminal cases.The BNP leader has been living in London since leaving the country in 2008 during the caretaker government regime.He instructed the party leaders and activists to cut Dhaka from the rest of the country, the way Dhaka was cut from the rest of the country ahead of the January 5 election.
