3 of a family killed as 2 launches collide in Meghna
Three members of a family were killed in a head-on collision between two launches in the river of Meghna in Chandpur early Tuesday, reports United News of Bangladesh. The victims were Sahana Begum, 60, and her grandson Shakil, 6, and Rupa, 30. They used to live in Lalbagh neighborhood of old part of Dhaka. Five of the injured were identified as Suraiya, 28, Rabbi, 11, Sheuly, 35, Dalia, 38, and Monwara, 50, while identity of the rest two could not be known immediately. Qamrul Islam, additional superintendent of police, said a Barisal-bound launch, ‘Parabat-9’, collided head-on with another launch, ‘Sundarban-8’, due to dense fog in the area at about 1:30 am, leaving Shakil dead on the spot and nine others injured. Later, Sahana died on her way to Dhaka. The other injured were rushed to a Dhaka hospital where Rupa succumbed to her injures at about 8:30 am. The dead and the injured were travelling by ‘Sundarban-8’ launch. Abdul Qaiyum, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed the death of Rupa.
