One burnt alive as blockade continues

Miscreants set fire on a bus that burnt alive its staff in Gazipur early Thursday, the 10th straight day of non-stop countrywide blockade sponsored by Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance. The victim Tofazzal, 18, a resident of Sunamganj, was the helper of the bus. Locals said trouble makers set ablaze the bus parked along the shoulder of the road at Battala Mahishbathan in Kaliakair upazila around 3:00am.

Tofazzal was sleeping inside the bus. The fire service men later recovered his charred body. Kaliakair police sub-inspector, Anwar Hossain, acknowledged the death news. Simultaneously, a dawn-to-dusk nationwide general strike called by BNP-led alliance was underway on Thursday. In a statement on Wednesday, the party joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that the daylong hartal would be enforced from 6:00am to 6:00pm across the country, protesting against the gun attack on BNP chairperson’s adviser Reaz Rahman. Earlier in a statement on Tuesday night, Rizvi had called a general strike from 6:00am today to 6:00am on Friday. The party shortened the general strike without giving any reason. Unidentified criminals on Tuesday evening shot Reaz in the left leg and back and set his car on fire near Westin Hotel at Gulshan-2 in the capital, an area where heavy security measure was in place since January 3.
