JCD leader killed in ‘gunfight’ after DB picks him up

Detectives picked up a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader, who was later killed in a ‘gunfight’ in the capital’s Khilgaon early Tuesday, a day after a Jamaat-e-Islami-backed ward councillor was killed in the capital in the same fashion. The deceased was identified as Nuruzzaman Jhony, 30, secretary of Khilgaon thana unit JCD. So far at least three opposition activists were killed in so-called ‘shootout’ since January 16, after joint forces started operations. Two were killed in Dhaka and another in Chapainawabganj. The detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police claimed that Jhony was killed in a ‘gunfight’ and police recovered a pistol, two bullets and six unexploded bombs. In protest at the incident, BNP and JCD called a 48-hour hartal in Dhaka division and the capital city from Wednesday morning coinciding with the ongoing shutdown enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance. Family members of the deceased said police killed him only because of him political identity. Jhony’s father Yiakub Ali told New Age that Jhony was staying outside at night since police were often storming into their house for harassment. On Friday evening, a civil team of Khilgaon police arrested Jhony’s younger brother Moniruzzaman Hira as they did not find him. Jhony went to Dhaka Central Jail on Monday afternoon to see his brother. Police picked up Jhony and another JCD activist Mainuddin from the jail gate and he was missing since then, said Yiakub. The victim’s mother, Mariam Begum, said they went to Khilgaon police station and DB office, but all denied having Jhony. Later on, family found the body at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the morning.

The morgue officials said Jhony’s body bore around 15 bullet shots in the chest and other parts of body. Yiakub said police had killed his son after being provoked by the speech of different Awami League leaders, ministers and top officials of law enforcement agencies since they were constantly asking the cops to shot the opposition men at sight. Detective officials, however, claimed that Jhony was wanted in several cases including assault on police, arson case and drug peddling. DB (souht) deputy commissioner Krishnapada Roy said Jhony was wanted in the case filed in connection with the recent bomb attack on police van at Matsya Bhaban. He said police detained him from Nazimuddin Road on Monday afternoon and took him to Jorapukur field of Tilpapara to arrest the other gangsters early Tuesday after he admitted his involvement in the attack on police van. A ‘shootout’ took place in the area and Jhony was caught in the line of fire, he said, adding that police later recovered the bullet-riddled body of Johnny. He died from his wounds after being rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital by subinspector Alauddin. Earlier, a Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-backed ward councillor of Narail municipal town, Imrul Kayes, 35, was shot dead in the AGB colony area early Monday. DB claimed that was a ‘gunfight’ incident. The Jamaat, in a statement issued by its press wing, said Imrul was a lawyer by profession and a local Jamaat leader and he was killed by the law enforcers after abduction.
