No discussion with killers, says PM
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Wednesday ruled out any possibility of a dialogue with her arch rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia to put an end to the present crisis. ‘To whom I would hold discussion? Is it with the killer who kills people by arson attacks?’ she questioned. The prime minister came up with the counter question when a journalist wanted to know about the initiative of Nagarik Samaj for a national dialogue during her visit to the burn victims at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital this morning. Former chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda, on behalf of the Nagarik Samaj, a group of civil society, sent letters to the president, prime minister and the BNP chairperson on Monday, requesting them to undertake initiatives for a national dialogue to resolve the ongoing political crisis.
As for the move, Hasina asked whether those who were suggesting a dialogue with BNP would have agreed to do it themselves if they had been insulted the way she was insulted several times by Khaleda Zia. She suggested the dialogue initiators to put forward their request to Khaleda Zia so that she stops killing people immediately in the name of her movement. The prime minister visited the burn victims of BNP-led alliance enforced indefinite blockade and talked with them. She also donated Taka 10 lakh for each of the victims as their treatment cost.
