Schools, colleges, univs stay open on Friday SSC examinees complete third exam.

Candidates of SSC and equivalent exams sat for their third test on Friday, while many educational institutions remained open on the weekend to cover for the loss of classes due to the ongoing political turmoil. The National Monitoring Committee for SSC exam in-charge Gautom Kumar in the afternoon said Friday’s exams were held smoothly and peacefully. Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid said exams are going on smoothly across the country. ‘No untoward incident was reported.’ He made the observation while visiting Motijheel Ideal School and College exam centre in Dhaka. Nahid assured all that the government will not take two exams on a single day. ‘This is just a rumour,’ he said. ‘We will complete the exams diligently and publish the results on time,’ he added. SSC examinees under eight general education boards took English first paper, while dakhil examinees under the madrassah education board took Arabic first paper on the day, originally scheduled from February 8.

The BNP-led alliance enforced general strikes in addition to transport blockade, which had forced the education ministry to shift the schedule of SSC and equivalent exams. At different exam centres in Dhanmondi, Azimpur, Mohammadpur and Mirpur in the capital, candidates were taking exam under heavy riot police guard. Meanwhile, in Munshiganj, nine teachers were arrested while preparing answer sheets for sale to SSC examinees on Friday, in Sirajdikhan in Munshiganj. They are Md Golam Mawola, Chitta Ranjan Barman, Md Saijuddin, Md Nasir, Shital Chandra, Didar Hosen, Ramjan Ali, Mokter Hosen and Mostafizur Rahman. Officer-in-charge of Sirajdikhan police station Fardous Hasan said, ‘we caught them red handed with question papers and answers at about 11.30am while they were working inside a house near the examination centre.’ ‘They are teachers of different non-government high schools in Munshiganj,’ he added. T

he teachers were preparing the copies to deliver to the house of one Amjad Hosen. They are likely to be produced in the court on Saturday. Under the current schedule following the deferrals, candidates take exams on three major subjects on three consecutive days. After English first paper exam, on Saturday they will sit for English Second paper and Mathematics on Sunday. Many teachers and guardians said holding exams on three consecutive days would put tremendous pressure on the examinees, which may lead to below par results. This year, some 14.79 lakh students — 7.63 lakh boys and 7.15 lakh girls — of 27,808 institutions are taking the exams at 3,116 centres across the country. The ongoing SSC exam suffered several blows already. Today’s English second paper exam was scheduled to be held February 10. Earlier, exams scheduled for February 2 and 4 were held last Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, many schools, including Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, St Joseph Higher Secondary School, Mohammadpur Preparatory Higher Secondary School, Maple Leaf International School, Junior Laboratory School, college section of Ideal School and College were kept open on Friday.
