Have faith in me: Mamata

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee who had been opposing the crucial Teesta water sharing deal for the last four years, on Thursday said Bangladesh need not be worried over the Teesta, assuring countrymen that the problem will be resolved soon.‘We have solved the Land Boundary Agreement…the Indian government introduced a bill in parliament and it will be effective after the parliament’s approval,’ she said, speaking at a function ‘Boithaki Bangla’ at Sonargaon hotel. On the question of sharing of the Teesta water, Mamata said ‘have faith in me (to resolve the issue).’However, she said ‘you have problems, we do have problems too. I will discuss it with Hasina-di (sister Hasina). Don’t worry.’The Teesta agreement was set to be inked during former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh’s Dhaka visit in September 2011 but the deal was stalled as Mamata provided stiff opposition to the deal and did not come to Dhaka with Manmohan.

Mamata now said there were some ‘misunderstandings’ over signing of the Teesta water sharing agreement with Bangladesh, but these misunderstandings will not remain so long as no one severs the bond and relationship deeply-rooted in the flow of the rivers Padma, Meghna and Jamuna.Meanwhile, the flow in the trans-boundary river Teesta has fallen further due to unilateral withdrawal of water upstream by India, playing havoc with biodiversity and agriculture in the lower riparian Bangladesh’s northern districts, according to officials. The Teesta water available at Dalia point in Nilphamari was recorded at 318 on February 19, the lowest so far in the current year against a historical average of 5,986 cusec, a senior official at the Joint Rivers Commission in Dhaka told New Age.India is withdrawing water from various points of the cross-border river, particularly in the lean season (February-March), allowing little amount to flow into Bangladesh, according to the officials.
