72-hr nationwide strike begins peacefully

The first day of 72-hour nationwide general strike enforced by Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance was underway peacefully in the city in addition to the indefinite blockade that entered its 48th straight day on Sunday.The alliance on Friday announced another spell of countrywide non-stop 72-hour general strike from 6:00am Sunday to 6:00am Wednesday. BNP joint secretary general Salah Uddin Ahmed through a press statement declared the strike.He also announced countrywide protest processions at all district, upazilas, municipalities of all metropolitan cities, on Monday.Traffic movements in the capital were almost normal as pickets were hardly seen in the city this morning.


Law enforcers remained deployed at the important points of the city.No untoward incident was reported from other parts of the country till filing of this report at around 10:15am.Meanwhile, the SSC and its equivalent examinations, scheduled for February 22 have been shifted to February 28 for the shutdown.
