SC scraps Ghulam Azam’s appeal against conviction
The Appellate Division on Tuesday scraped the appeal filed by late Jamaat Amir Ghulam Azam against his 90 years of imprisonment for his crimes against humanity in 1971 during Bangladesh’s liberation war. The court also scraped another appeal filed by the government seeking death sentence for Ghulam Azam. A four-member bench headed by the chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order as the attorney general, Mahbubey Alam, told the court that Ghulam Azam died on October 23, 2014. On August 5, 2013, Ghulam Azam had filed an appeal with the Appellate Division against the International Crimes Tribunal-1 verdict that handed him down 90 years of imprisonment. He had also sought acquittal of the war crimes charges. The, government, however, filed another appeal on August 12, 2013, seeking Ghulam Azam’s death sentence. Meanwhile, the court asked the government and the counsels for Jamaat Amir Motiur Rahman Nizami to prepare their brief arguments within 2 weeks on the appeal filed by Nizami against his death sentence in the war crimes case.
