BNP to observe ‘democracy killing day’ amid AL’s threat

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday said that it would observe ‘democracy killing day’ on January 5 holding black flag processions across the country amid the ruling Awami League’s ‘threat’ not to allow BNP to take to street.
BNP on December 28 announced that the party leaders and activists wearing black badges would bring out black flag processions in districts and metropolitan cities across the country on January 5 to mark the anniversary of January 5, 2014 general election boycotted by all the opposition parties.
BNP also announced that it would hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on January 7 to mark the day.
The ruling Awami League announced that it would
observe January 5 as ‘victory of democracy day.’
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a briefing at the party’s central office on Friday said that the party leaders in various districts were preparing for the black flag processions and they would make the programme a success.
He said that the party also completed all formalities to get permission to hold rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan on January 7.
About Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif’s reported remarks that people would not allow BNP to take to street to observe the democracy killing day, Rizvi said that such statement was an example of killing democracy as democracy meant rally and procession.
He said that those who feared people and processions and unleash striking forces on the general people were undemocratic.
Hanif’s statement proved that they were the killer of democracy, Rizvi said.
Mentioning AL general secretary Obaidul Quader’s announcement of observing January 5 as victory of democracy day, Rizvi said that he did not know whether there was any example of such ‘mockery’ anywhere in the world.
BNP leaders Ataur Rahman Dhali, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, Abdus Salam Azad and Aminul Islam, among others, were present.
