Plot to kill MP hatched earlier: PM

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Monday said that the murder of ruling Awami League lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton was plotted by some quarters as such attempts, she mentioned, were made earlier at least twice.
‘He was humiliated in a planned way. It was reported in the media that the lawmaker shot at a minor body, but the attack on him that led to the shooting did not come in the media,’ a minister told New Age quoting the prime minister as saying in the weekly cabinet meeting.
Hasina made the observation as the cabinet adopted condolence motions over the deaths of the lawmaker for Gaibandha 1 parliamentary constituency and Justice Mohammad Bazlur Rahman, an Appellate Division judge.
Gunmen on Saturday evening killed Manzurul at his village home at Sundarganj.
Justice Bazlur Rahman died of lung cancer at a city hospital on Sunday afternoon at the age of 62.
The prime minister told her cabinet colleagues that Manzurul had to struggle against the reign of Jamaat and Shibir in his locality to strengthen the Awami League at the grassroots in Gaibandha.
Manzurul had grabbed the headlines after shooting eight-year-old schoolboy Shahadat Hossain Sourav at Sundarganj on October 2, 2015 allegedly under the influence of alcohol, drawing nationwide criticisms. He was arrested in October and released on bail in November 2015.
Monday’s cabinet approved in principle the Chittagong Development Authority Bill 2016 to update the law enacted in 1959, cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said at a briefing after the meeting.
He said that the bill proposed significant increase in the penalties for deviations from the law in building constructions under the development authority.
He said the cabinet also endorses in principle the draft Housing and Building Research Institute Bill 2016 to replace a martial law ordinance promulgated in 1977 without making major changes.
It approved in principle the draft Bangladesh Veterinary Council Bill 2016 to replace a 1982 ordinance, he said, adding that all such martial law ordinances were nullified by the Supreme Court.
