BNP finalises proposed names for EC
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party Monday night finalised names for the next Election Commission to be submitted to the search committee for the commission today.
Before finalising the names, BNP checked with the names proposed by its allies at the party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s office at Gulshan, party leaders said.
Finally Khaleda, who arrived at her office at about 9: 40pm, finalised her party’s list of potential names for the commission, the leaders said.
BNP, however, did not hold any briefing, although BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said that they would inform reporters on Monday night about sending the names.
Earlier Monday afternoon, Fakhrul at secretary general-level meeting of BNP-led alliance at BNP central office urged the leaders of the alliance, particularly those recently had talks with president Abdul Hamid on the reconstitution of the commission, to come with their proposed names at Khaleda’s Gulshan office in the evening, an alliance leader said.
They were requested to come to Khaleda’s office to keep one or two proposed names common on each party’s list of names for the commission, the alliance leader said.
Seven parties in the alliance, including BNP, Liberal Democratic Party, Bangladesh Jatiya Party, Khelafat Majlish and Bangladesh National Awami Party, were invited by the president to the talks.
Top leaders of the alliance including BJP chairman Andaleev Rahman Partha, NAP chairman Zebel Rahman Gani came to Gulshan office with their lists for the commission.
Components of the alliance would separately submit names to the Cabinet Division.
NAP chairman Zebel told New Age that his party would submit five names.
Replying to a question, Zebel said that there might some common names on the lists to be submitted by the components of the alliance.
On Saturday the search committee sought five potential names for the commission from each of 31 political parties who had talks with the president. The parties were urged to submit the names to the Cabinet Division by 3:00pm today.
