AL to send names of EC to search committee
The ruling Awami League on Monday decided to send names for the next chief election commissioner and other election commissioners to the search committee.
A meeting of the AL central working committee at prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s residence Ganabhban also empowered Hasina, also the AL president to finalise the names to be proposed, said leaders present at the meeting.
Hasina asked the working committee members to suggest names of their choices from whom she would finalise the five names, the leaders said.
Emerging from the meeting, party presidium member Pijush Bhattachrya told New Age that the meeting decided to send names for the commission to the search committee today.
The members of the central AL working committee and the advisory council attended the meeting.
The president Abdul Hamid on January 25 formed the six-member search committee, headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain of the Appellate Division after having talks with 31 registered political parties on the reconstitution of the commission.
The search committee on Saturday at a meeting urged the 31 parties to send five names each for the commission to the committee by 3:00pm today.
The search committee will select two names for each positions in the commission – the chief election commissioner and four election commissioners from the names given by the parties.
The tenure of the incumbent commission would expire in February.
