Fair election not possible under new CEC: BNP

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday said that the newly formed Election Commission led by ‘a former controversial government
official’ as the chief election commissioner could not discharge its duties neutrally and no fair election could be held under his leadership.
At a briefing at BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulashan office, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the newly appointed chief election commissioner, KM Nurul Huda, retired as joint secretary and he had been promoted to the rank of secretary after his retirement only on paper, but never acted as an additional secretary or a secretary.
Referring to newspaper reports that Nurul Huda was sent into forced retirement during the BNP government in 2001, Fakhrul said that NUrul Huda might have grievances against BNP and as he got post-retirement retrospective promotion during Awami League government, he might have allegiance to AL.
Fakhrul also mentioned that Nurul Huda was an organiser of Janatar Mancha, a platform against the then BNP government, while he was the deputy commissioner in Comilla.
