Gulshan attack ‘arms supplier’ held in Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s counter terrorism and transnational crime unit arrested a man suspected of supplying arms to Gulshan cafe attackers near Kakoli rail crossing in the capital’s Banani area Tuesday night.
The detained Mizanur Rahman, 60, also known as Boro Mizan, was the ‘main arms and ammunition supplier’ for the Gulshan Holey Artisan Bakery attack on July 1 last year, which left 29 dead, including 17 foreigners, five suspected extremists and two police officials, CTTC’s additional deputy commissioner Saiful Islam said on Wednesday.
Mizan, hailing from Chapainawabganj, was the ‘key official of Neo Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh’ for running its operations at bordering Shibganj in Chapainawabganj, according to CTTC officials.
He was the ‘military chief’ of Junud Al Tawhid and had later become a follower of Gulshan attack ‘mastermind’ Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, a Canadian of Bangladeshi origin, who was later shot dead during an operation in Narayangnaj on August 27, 2016, the officials said.
CTTC’s another additional deputy commissioner Sanwar Hossain said that Mizan had been involved in procuring arms and explosives which were later used in Gulshan cafe attack.
The officials added that he had arranged the delivery of explosives and weapons, bound for Tamim, to the house of another slain suspected extremist Tanvir Qaderi in the capital’s Bashundhara residential area.
The police produced Mizan before a metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka and sought 10-day remand but the magistrate fixed the hearing on March 5, ordering the suspect to be sent to jail.
