Constitution to determine BNP’s joining election-time government, says Quader

Ruling Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said that the constitution would determine whether BNP would be able to be in the election time government.
‘We will not be able to provide BNP any opportunity to join in the election time government. If the constitution has any provision, they will be included,’ Quader told reporters at a briefing organised by Bangladesh Mahila Awami League at party president Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmondi.
The Election Commission will conduct the next general elections slated for 2019 and the election time government would carry out the routine work of administration, he added.
Referring to BNP’s demand for formation of a polls-time government, the AL spokesperson pointed out that in the constitution there was no provision for ‘election-aid’ government.
He hoped that BNP would participate in the next general election to save their party’s registration with the Election Commission.
Awami League already started its organisational preparations to revamp the party to make it stronger and a well-disciplined party, he said.
The party would complete the council sessions of the party’s associate organisations within one year and as part of this, Mahila Awami League would hold its conference on March 4 and Juba Mahila League on March 8, Quader, also the road transport and bridge minister, said.
‘We have also taken an initiative to increase the number of the women leaders in our party’s central committee to fulfill the Election Commission provision of keeping 33 per cent women leaders in the top echelon of the party,’ Quader added.
President of Mahila Awami League, Ashrafunnesa Moshrraf, general secretary Pinu Khan and office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap and others attended the press conference.
