Protests flare as BCL men loot shop in Rangpur city

Several hundred local people took to the streets after Bangladesh Chhatra League activists of Begum Rokeya University unit on Saturday ransacked a fast food shop and looted valuables in Rangpur city after failing to extort money.
After the incident, the central committee of ruling Awami League-backed student organisation suspended the university unit committee for breaking organisational discipline.
Majedul Islam Lablu, owner of the fast food shop, said that the university unit BCL president Mehedi Hasan Shishir demanded Tk 1 lakh from him in the morning.
He said a group of BCL men, led by Shishir, swooped on his shop, Lifa Fast Food and Confectionary, and ransacked it about 10:30am as he refused to give the amount.
Protesting at the attack, locals and traders of Parker More area took to the streets and blockaded the Rangpur-Kurigram road for about an hour.
The protesters withdrew the blockade when police assured them of taking actions against those involved in the attack.
Owner of the shop filed a case against the university unit president of BCL Shishir and five unnamed BCL activists with the Kotwali Police Station.
Shishir, however, denied his involvement in the attack and said that the general students carried out the attack on the shop.
A tense situation was prevailing in the university area until filing of this report in the evening as the BCL men and the local businessmen were in a confrontational position.
Chase and counter chase also took place between them in the afternoon over the incident.
