Khaleda expresses ‘no confidence’ in HC bench dealing Barapukuria graft case.
The Bangladesh National Party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday expressed ‘no confidence’ in two High Court judges who were set to deliver verdict on March 15 on her petition challenging the proceedings against her in Barapukuria coal mine graft case. She also prayed for transferring her matter to another High Court bench saying she might not get justice if the matter was heard and disposed of by the bench of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan. In the petition, Khaleda said that Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury had been elected Supreme Court Bar Association vice-president nominated by Awami League-backed panel. She said the bench was scheduled for March 15 for delivering verdict on her petition without hearing her lawyers including Rafiq-ul Huq and Zainul Abedin.
She also said that the bench refused her petition for adjournment of the hearing on ground that her case-filing lawyer AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan remained busy for election campaigning as secretary candidate of the SCBA. Deputy attorney general Goutam Kumar Roy told New Age that he received a copy of the petition which was likely to be moved before the bench on Thursday. Earlier in 2008, the High Court hearing Khaleda’s petition stayed the proceeding of the Barapukuria graft case and asked the government why the case proceeding would not be quashed. On March 5, Khaleda’s petition came up for hearing before the HC bench and the court after hearing the Anti Corruption Commission lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan set to deliver the verdict on March 15. Barapukuria graft case is now pending with the Dhaka metropolitan senior special judge court.
