HC asks govt to explain by Sunday why it won’t be ordered to trace Salahuddin.
The High Court on Thursday asked the government to explain on Sunday why it should not be directed to find out Bangladesh Nationalist Party joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed and produce him before the court. The High Court bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddiqui and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore passed the order after hearing on the petition of Salahuddin’s wife moved by Supreme Court Bar Association president Khandker Mahbub Hossain and senior jurist Moudud Ahmed. The court asked the secretary of home ministry, inspector general of police, Rapid Action Battalion director general, and additional inspectors general of police of Criminal Investigation Department and Special Branch give the explanation by Sunday. Attorney general Mahbubey Alam submitted that he had already talked to the inspector general of police and he said Salahuddin was not arrested by police.
Hasina Ahmed, the wife of Salahuddin Ahmed, on Thursday filed a petition with the High Court seeking a directive on the government to locate her husband who was picked up by law enforcers on Tuesday night. The petitioner also prayed to the High Court for production of her husband in the court within 24 hours from today. Salahuddin Ahmed disappeared on Tuesday night with the family alleging that he was picked up by joint forces from a house in the capital’s Uttara. His whereabouts remained unknown till Thursday noon. The government, however, denied the allegations that Salahuddin, also the BNP spokesperson, was picked up by law enforcers. The law enforcement agencies had reportedly been hunting for Salahuddin since the arrest of Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, another joint secretary general of BNP, on January 31.
