o dialogue with Khaleda: AL.

The Awami League has rejected outright BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s call for a dialogue for holding an early general election under a non-partisan government to overcome the present political impasse. ‘Everybody knows that Khaleda Zia is involved in the killings and violence during her ongoing movement. No dialogue can be held with her as she did not take the responsibility for the killings and violence,’ said Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif. Blaming prime minister Sheikh Hasina for the current political crisis, Khaleda Zia on Friday said the ongoing ‘peaceful’ movement of her alliance would continue until it reaches a ‘logical conclusion’ and urged people to ‘bear with temporary sufferings’ for the ‘greater interests’. Hanif, giving the AL’s instant reaction to Khaleda Zia’s statement, said that every word Khaleda uttered was a lie and every statement she made was falsehood and misinformation. ‘She is in the habit of lying.’ Referring to Khaleda’s claims that prime minister Sheikh Hasina had promised to hold another general election soon after the January 5 polls, Hanif said that the prime minister had never made any such pledge before the election.

About the BNP chairperson’s claim that the ruling party men were involved in the killings and violence during the ongoing blockade and hartals, Hanif said that Khaleda Zia was trying to shift the blame but she would not be able to escape trial for her involvement in the killings and violence. ‘At least 50 activists of BNP, Juba Dal and Chhatra Dal have been caught red-handed while making or hurling bombs. It is clear that she [Khaleda] is instructing her people to kill people but she is trying to shift the blame. What a blatant lie..,’ he told newsmen at the party president’s Dhanmondi office in the evening. Hanif also wondered how could Khaleda claim that people supported her movement when there was no participation of people or even her activists in it. He said that however hard Khaleda Zia tried she could not escape trial and the responsibility for the killings and violence during her current movement. Hanif said that it was the BNP chairperson, not the Awami League-led government, who had snatched the people’s right to vote by terrorising the voters going to polling centres, setting the polling stations on fire and killing polling officers. AL joint general secretary Dipu Moni, organising secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim and office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap was present, among others, at the press conference. The ruling party would give its formal reaction to the BNP chairperson’s statement at a press conference at 11:00am today at the party president’s Dhanmondi office.
