No defence deal without solving pressing issues: BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday claimed that only any defence deal or memorandum of understanding between Bangladesh and India without settlement of the pressing problems of Bangladesh would not be acceptable to people.
During prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s four-day visit to India that began on Friday, 33 deals and memorandums of understandings in different areas including defence, peaceful use of nuclear energy and energy
would be singed between Dhaka and New Delhi.
Talking to reporters Fakhrul said that at this moment, the major problems of Bangladesh included sharing of waters of Teesta River and other common rivers with India, ending the killing of Bangladeshi citizens along the border by the Indian Border Security Force and
removing tariff and non-tariff barriers in trade and commerce.
He said only any defence deal or memorandum with India would not be acceptable to the people of Bangladesh without resolving these major problems.
Fakhrul was talking to journalists on the premises of grave of late president Ziaur Rahman, also the BNP founder, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka after placing wreath and offering fateha at the graveside along with BNPs joint secretary general Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, who was released from jail recently.
Many leaders and activists of BNP and its front and associate organisations went to Zia’s grave on the occasion.
Fakhrul said that BNP thought there was no necessity of any defence deal or memorandum when the government was claiming that the relations between Bangladesh and India reached new heights.
Fakhrul said that people would not accept any deal against national interests and the country’s ‘independence’ and ‘sovereignty’.
In reply to a question, he said that people of Bangladesh always expected entire democratic world, not only from neighbouring country, to play their role in establishing democracy in Bangladesh and restoring people’s fundamental and voting rights.
BNP leaders Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Ruhul Quddus Talukdar Dulu, Azizul Bari Helal, Aminul Islam, Saiful Islam Patu, Jubadal president Saiful Alam Nirob, general secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Swechchha Sebok Dal president Shafiul Bari Babu, general secretary Abdul Kader Jewell, Chhatra Dal president Rajib Ahsan, among others, were present at the event.
