ALAH UDDIN DISAPPEARANCE, Govt undecided on what to tell HC.

The attorney general’s office is yet to decide how to respond to the High Court directive to produce BNP joint secretary general Salah Uddin Ahmed by today, as law enforcement agencies are yet to confirm his whereabouts. ‘We are yet to take any decision on what we will tell the court,’ deputy attorney general Bashiuddin told New Age Saturday evening. ‘We will wait until 10:30am Sunday to receive any development from police and RAB on the whereabouts of Salah Uddin,’ added Bashiuddin. Addressing a programme at Dhaka University, inspector general of police, AKM Shahidul Hoque, said the law enforcers did not arrest him and the IGP said the police were not aware of the whereabouts of Salah Uddin, even before his disappearance. ‘We were in fact looking for him as he was wanted by police.’ Police filed a general dairy with Uttara police station where it said they investigated the BNP leader’s wife’s allegations, but did not find anything to corroborate it.

The BNP leader’s wife Hasina Ahmed said they were passing days anxiously. ‘I want nothing but my husband returned unhurt. If he is accused, follow the legal course and produce him in court,’ said Hasina. DMP Uttara division deputy commissioner Iqbal Hossain told New Age they were looking to trace the real tenant Iqbal Hasnat, but were yet to find him. He said that the building guard and locals told them that the tenant had brought a guest on Saturday saying that he will live there for a few days. ‘None, however, could confirm whether the guest was Salah Uddin,’ said Iqbal. A concerned police officer quoted the guard Akhtarul Islam as saying that some five to six people came to the building at Uttara Sector 3 and the guest went away with them. The guard, earlier, however, told New Age that ‘armed people’ identifying themselves as Detective Branch officials had picked up Salah Uddin blindfolded from the house at about 10:15pm on Tuesday. ‘Four or five men entered the building with firearms.’ ‘I asked them, “What do you want here?” They beat me and said, “You will know about it later on”. They also brandished their guns. They went straight to the first floor of the (three-storied) building, stayed there for about 20 minutes and returned with him (Salah Uddin) blindfolded,’ security guard Akhtarul Islam told New Age on Thursday.
