EC move over EVM ill-motivated: BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday termed ‘ill-motivated’ the Election Commission’s fresh move regarding electronic voting machine after prime minister’s son recently made statements in favour of introducing the technology in election.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing at the party’s central office said chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Thursday said the EVM would be used in the next parliament election if all political parties wanted.
Rizvi said two days ago prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s ICT adviser and her son had stated that EVM would be used in next parliament poll.
The CEC’s statement echoed it, he said adding that popularity of the ruling party dropped to zero level so the prime minister’s adviser again came up with EVM for vote manipulation.
Rizvi said the EC statement was basically intended to fulfil the government’s desire.
He said to bring up the EVM issue before people by the EC was ‘ill-motivated’
He said many countries including India, Germany and America backtracked from EVM following controversy.
The BNP leader criticised the government and especially the commerce minister for failing to check the price hike of essential items before the month of Ramadan.
He alleged that prices of essential items doubled in last one week by the ruling party’s business syndicate.
Asked if any businessman belonging to the opposition, including BNP, was in the business syndicate, he replied in the negative saying if anyone remained, BNP would have no relation with him.
He asked for bringing the prices of essential items under control before Ramadan.
On the recent rape of two university students, Rizvi said unruly children of ruling class and influential people had become violent towards women.
Rizvi alleged that people having link with the ruling party were committing such barbaric activities.
He said the spate of the menace spread across the country due to culture of impunity and current government’s misrule.
BNP leaders Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, Abdus Salam Azad, Monir Hossain and Asadul Karim Shahin, among others, were present at the briefing.
